Best Travel Guide To Boyoma/Stanley Falls In DR Congo
Located on the Congo River, Boyoma Falls is a stunning series of seven cataracts that stretch over 100 km. Once called Stanley Falls, Boyoma Falls is a long series of cataracts located along the Lualaba River in DR Congo.
The falls are spread out on the Congo River over 100km south of Kisangani in eastern DR Congo.
After an overall drop of 61 meters and at the end of the seventh cataract, the river merges with the Congo River. The Wagenya fishing tribe lives in the region and after generations of living along this unique river, they have developed special methods to catch fish.
Travelers see their wooden tripods in the rapids, resting in the natural holes formed in the rocks by the running water. The tripods hold baskets that serve as nets for the fishermen.
Boyoma Falls is a series of seven cascades in the Lualaba River, each no more than 5 meters (16 ft.) high. The falls extend more than 100 km (62 miles) along a bend of the river between the towns of Ubundu and Kisangani in Congo DRC.
The seven cascades have a total fall of 61 meters (200 ft.), and the seventh and largest cascade is 730 meters (800 yards) wide. They form the largest waterfall by volume of annual flow rate in the world, exceeding both Niagara and Iguazu Falls.
Beyond the rapids, the Lualaba River becomes the Congo River and a railway bypasses the series of rapids, connecting Kisangani and Ubundu. The last of the seven cascades of the Boyoma Falls is referred to as the ‘Wagenia Fall’, referring to the local fishermen who developed a special technique of fishing in the River.
The falls have beautiful scenery, best for hiking and trekking all surrounded by beautiful flora and fauna.
Arrange with ULTIMATE WILD SAFARIS to explore these wonderful falls.
