A perfect Islands destination with everything for everyone, the Ssese Islands archipelago boasts of being home to eighty-four islands, one of the most wonderful places to live in the world on the banks of Lake Victoria in Uganda. These beautiful islets are conterminous with Kalangala district housing the main town Centre and district Headquarters located on Bugala Island in Southern Central Uganda.

And for those looking for somewhere to unwind, the Ssese Islands are the perfect retreat. Ssese’s flourishing archipelago of 84 islands comprises white sandy beaches, clear waters, and tropical forests.

A cocktail of golden sands worthy of Latin America, sun-kissed beaches, and lapping waves, the archipelago of the Ssese Islands is Uganda’s answer to the tropical gems of the East African coast on the Indian Ocean.

Peppering the waters of Lake Victoria, they are considered the country’s premier rest spot, with the popular Buggala Island and Bulago coming up top of the menu.

You can either kick back in one of the lakeside resorts or wax up the walking boots and make for the hills, where hippo-dotted swamps hide between the ridges. Kayaks and other watersports are all available on Buggala.

Location Of Ssese/Kalangala Islands :

The islands occupy the northwestern corner of Lake Victoria, the second-largest freshwater lake in the world. The largest island in the archipelago is called Bugala Island, which accounts for more than half the archipelago's land area. Its largest town Kalangala serves as the headquarters of the district that carries the same name (Kalangala District). Kalangala is located approximately 51 kilometres (32 mi), across water, southwest of Entebbe, in Wakiso District, on the Ugandan mainland.

History Of Ssese/Kalangala Islands :

Little is known about the earliest inhabitants of Ssese, but some oral traditions associate it with the creation of Buganda and claim that its founder Kintu hailed from the islands, or at least arrived in Buganda via them.

The Baganda revere Ssese as the Islands of the Gods. In pre-colonial times it was customary for the Kings of Buganda to visit the islands and pay tribute to the several balubaale whose main shrines are situated there. These include shrines to Musisi (spirit of earthquakes) and Wanema (physical handicaps) on Bukasa Island, as well as the shrine of Mukasa (spirit of the lake), on Bubembe

This archipelago consists of about 84 islands, the largest of which are Bugala Island, Banda Island, and Bukasa Island. The Ssese Islands are a popular tourist destination known for their beautiful beaches, lush forests, and diverse wildlife. The Ssese Islands are a group of islands located in Lake Victoria, Uganda.

The Islands that make up Ssese:

Buggala is the largest and most developed island for tourism. Swimming is a popular activity here, especially at Mutambala beach. You can also hire bicycles or quad bikes to explore the island.

The privately owned Banda Island is tranquil and serenely beautiful, and it's perfect to relax and soak up the sun. And If you do fancy venturing onto the lake, canoes can be hired, or you can go fishing for tilapia and Nile perch.

For animal lovers, Ngamba Island, also known as Chimp Island, is a chimpanzee sanctuary, set up by the Jane Goodall Foundation.

Bulago Island is excellent for nature walks, the diverse terrain of rocky outcrops and woodlands means there are several trails to choose from and good opportunities to see uncommon birds and wildlife

Wildlife In Ssese/Kalangala Islands :

The islands are home to a variety of animals including primates, which are not easily accessible on the mainland. The most common large terrestrial mammal is the Vervet monkey, which is often seen in the vicinity of Lutoboka and Kalangala. Bushbuck and black-and-white colobus are also present but seldom observed.

Since Buggala was separated from the mainland, one endemic creek rat and three endemic butterfly species have evolved on the island. Water and forest birds are prolific. There are a variety of hornbills, barbets, turacos, robin chats, flycatchers, and weavers.

Particularly common are the jewel-like pygmy kingfisher, the brown-throated wattle-eye, and the paradise flycatcher. African fish eagles and palm-nut vultures are often seen near the lake, while immense breeding colonies of little egrets and great cormorants occur on Lutoboka and other bays.

This has led to the evolution of a nascent but growing tourism industry on the islands. Infrastructure is still rudimentary but is slowly improving.

Tourist activities to do in Ssese Islands:

Swimming At Ssese/Kalangala Islands :

The clear cool waters are perfect for a hot afternoon swim. Mutumbala beach on Buggala Island is the most popular spot from which to swim, but it's likely that your accommodation will also have designated areas for swimming.

In the Ssese Islands, there are no hippos, and crocodiles are extremely unusual. Be aware that Bilharzia, while very rare these days, is thought to be present in the lake so many choose to swim in the hotel pools instead.

We can arrange this for you. Fishing equipment can be hired, or you can bring your own.

Ngamba Island Chimpanzee Sanctuary:

Home to over 50 rescued and orphaned chimpanzees; Ngamba Island Chimp Sanctuary is now a primate's paradise and an important conservation project thanks to the Jane Goodall Foundation.

Many of the chimpanzees were rescued from poachers and are unlikely to survive reintroduction to the wild.

Under the protection of the sanctuary, they now spend their time swinging from the rainforest trees that cover the island. The sanctuary allows guests to spend quality time playing with and feeding the chimpanzees, a unique experience you won't find anywhere else in Uganda.
