Travel Guide To Blue Nile Waterfalls In Ethiopia
The Blue Nile Waterfalls known locally as Tis Isat (Water that Smokes) is a sensational sight, kicking up a thunderous wall of spray as it crashes over a 45-metre high cliff before being channelled into a frothing gorge.
Location of Blue Nile Waterfalls in Ethiopia;
The Blue Nile Falls are located on the Blue Nile River which is tributary to River Nile, the longest river in Africa and located in Ethiopia. It's situated on the upper course of the Blue Nile, about 30 kilometers (19 mi) downstream from the town of Bahir Dar and Lake Tana. These falls are one of Ethiopia's best destinations to visit for any tourist.
The falls are 42 meters (138 ft) high and tend to rise over 45 meters during the rainy season and consist of four streams that tend to vary from a trickle in the dry season to over 400 meters wide in the rainy season.
From the village of Tis Abay, a splendid series of full frontal viewpoints can be reached along a 1.5km footpath across the 17th century Alata Bridge. Birders should check the riverine forest here for endemics and near-endemics such as blue-breasted bee-eaters, white-cheeked turaco, black-winged lovebirds, and yellow-fronted parrots.
The Blue Nile Falls isolate the ecology of Lake Tana from the ecology of the rest of the Nile, and this isolation has played a role in the evolution of the beautiful fauna around the lake just downstream from the falls you get to see the first stone Portuguese bridge constructed in Ethiopia, built in the 17th century.
The Blue Nile Falls are compared to the famous Niagara Falls as the river flows out of Lake Tana and eventually changes mood pouring into a sheer 42 meters high thus exploding and causing mist and rainbow especially during the morning hours before continuing its course and joining the white Nile in Sudan.
Another scenic view is that of a hydroelectric station upstream, Though this has had an impact on the water flow smaller than its natural 400m-wide flow, the Blue Nile waterfalls still stand dropping huge in, especially in August and September.
Boat cruising along the river is another activity with sightings of Nile crocodiles and other riverbanks’ beautiful scenery.
