Explore the Karera Falls, a lovely waterfall and famous tourist attraction of Burundi.
Also known as Chutes de la Karera Kagera Falls or Chutes de la Kagera is a unique and spectacular series of waterfalls in southeastern Burundi. They are located to the south of Rutana, Burundi. The falls occupy over 142 hectares and the falls are made up of six branches divided on three landings. Chutes de la Karera is a collective name for the four unique and wonderful falls in the area.
On the first level, is a main fall subdivided into two parallel branches of a length estimated at 80 m about which pours on a basin. This fall consists of several waterfalls of different sizes intersected with two platforms. Another smaller waterfall is located roughly 50 m to the west of this main fall. The waters of these two falls converge on a second landing to form the third waterfall, which pours into the valley.
The best of the falls is Nyakai I where the tour begins, then When you continue upstream, you meet the smallest waterfall Nyakai II, a good spot for bathing, then the watercourse is later joined by that of Mwaro Falls and later creates the tallest waterfall overall, Kagera falls. The falls are at best in the wet season and a perfect time to visit them.
The fifth completes its spectacular descent to give way to a river which first runs initially in small cascades and then slowly at the bottom of the valley, through a forest gallery, which leads to the Muyovozi River and the Malagarazi which is thrown finally into Lake Tanganyika after a long course until Kigoma in Tanzania.
Along the falls grows dense gallery forest and the general scenery of this area is beautiful. The site is a beloved tourist destination both for locals and infrequent foreign guests.
As you would expect, the falls are at their best during the wet season (especially from October to January). The falls are 64km south of Gitega, but as there’s no public transport, you’ll have to charter a vehicle in Bujumbura to get here.
