Best Travel Guide To Olmoti Crater Wildlife in Tanzania

Enjoy a walking safari in the Olmoti Crater in Tanzania, situated at the southern divergence of the Gregory Rift of the East African Rift System in northern Tanzania that stretches some 4000 km from the Read Sea and Gulf of Aden in the north to the Zambezi River in Mozambique.

Olmoti Crater is part of the Plio-Pleistocene Ngorongoro Volcanic Highland. Olmoti Crater has a current summit diameter of about 6 km, a maximum elevation of 3,100 meters above the mean sea level, and is among the largest volcanoes of the Ngorongoro Volcanic Highland. Its composition is considered to be primarily of basalt and trachyandesite. Olmoti Crater is considered the source for the bulk of interbedded volcanic and volcaniclastic deposits that comprise much of the upper Bed I section of nearby Olduvai Gorge, and part of the Laetoli sequence, both known for their well-preserved fossils and archaeological remains. Age and chemical data reported here are compatible with those derived from tephra and lava interbedded in Bed I at Olduvai Gorge and from the Olpiro Beds at Laetoli.

This shallow grassy Crater is a source of Munge River, which pours through a notch in the Rim in a beautiful waterfall on its way to the great Ngorongoro Crater. There is a scenic and pleasant walk from Nainokanoka through the forest up to the top of the waterfall.

Visitors get to enjoy the Olmoti Crater Climb that ascends directly from the Highlands Camp; the Olmoti Crater climb follows an ancient Maasai cattle trail up a gentle ascent through mountain forest, grassland, and rocky outcrops. The 2-3 hour Walk (round-trip) offers outstanding birding, and a large array of butterflies and is a botanist’s dream, with varying vegetation and a variety of splendid fern species. At the summit, guests are treated to a stunning view of the Olmoti Crater.

Tourists are accompanied by armed rangers and get to enjoy sightings of wildlife animals along the wild route including buffalo, zebra, bushbuck, leopard and hyena, and occasional elephants that graze through.

Visitors can also engage in Cultural Activities where they get the opportunity to visit the Maasai local communities where they share their experiences, providing a richer understanding of the culture that defines this corner of East Africa. Guests are invited to a Maasai boma to gain an insight into the traditional cattle-herding practices.
